Expected Unexpected

At 41, Nicole Marie appears to be on the top of her game. She is thriving in her career, has finally settled into her new home, and has close friends who genuinely want to see her win in life. All is going well until one morning, on a coffee run for her co-workers, Nicole decides to finally take a pregnancy test as she has been feeling nauseated. Once the test reveals that she is pregnant, Nicole finds herself grappling with a range of emotions as she contemplates how this will change her life forever, regardless of what decision she ends up making. She confides in her close friend, and colleague, Rebecca who does not hold back in her opinion that she does not think her friend should go through this “geriatric” pregnancy. Nicole does not receive this well as she is still trying to decide what she should do. Rebecca reminds Nicole of her own experiences with being a single-mother to help Nicole understand some of the challenges she may face. This is further complicated when Nicole’s other close friend, Ryan, who often clashes with Rebecca, disagrees with Rebecca’s opinion and believes that Nicole should at least consider having the baby.

Even though both friends have the best of intentions with their advice as to what she should do, ultimately, Nicole knows the difficult decision lies within herself and she must come to terms with what is best for her and whether she is positioned to be a good mother.

Despite her friends’ intentions, Nicole remains uncertain and somewhat feeling defeated. To help Niclole’s mood improve, Ryan, who has known Nicole since middle school, drops by Nicole’s place to chat and lift her mood. During their visit, Ryan presses Nicole about what is on her mind because they have not been regularly talking via the phone - their daily ritual. Slowly, Nicole opens up about her concerns while she and Ryan talk also about the history of the friendship and Ryan’s past relationships.

In the wake of discovering her pregnancy, Nicole, Rebecca, and Ryan prepare to go on their annual friend-iversary trip to Disneyland. While Ryan is excited about the trip, Rebecca still has reservations about Nicole’s potential choices. Ultimately, Ryan and Rebecca agree, again, to support Nicole and continue on their friend-iversary trip while leaving room for Nicole to decide.

This film explores the complex emotional toll that women often go through when faced with the decision whether or not to keep a pregnancy, within the backdrop of a society that is making it more difficult for women to choose. And for those women who choose to become a mother, there are additional feelings of insecurity when facing motherhood as a single person or someone who is older.

Skettel Skettel

Skettel

Skettel follows a young Jamaican-American, Marley, and the adversary she deals with in her everyday life and the raunchy nightclub she works at to care for her special needs son. The narrative is based on the director’s life in 2010 in Atlanta, where she had to work in a rowdy East Atlanta nightclub as a bottle girl to help her mother with bills and take care of her neurodivergent toddler. The film takes a trippy and surrealistic approach, exploring different themes and the nuances of being Jamaican and American. It also brings a fresh perspective to a sub-culture of the South - bottle girl culture. At the core, it's a survival story about a young mother who feverishly desires to preserve herself without compromising her child's wellbeing.

Ana, a young Filipina filmmaker, shoots a re-enactment of a fight she once had with her mother - a fight brought on by mutual refusals to communicate. Spurred on by the obsessive need for perfection, Ana “fixes” the fight by rewriting every veiled insult into a chance for forgiveness. As her perfect story diverges further from the reality of what happened, she begins to realise what her mom has been trying to say all along.
